What Happens to MyDD after the Primary?

I know people will immediately assume I'm writing a "snark" diary or something here, but I assure you that I am not and that I am trying to ask a real question here.

Essentially what I want to ask is, what happens to MyDD after the nomination is wrapped up?  For the sake of argument, I'm going to assume that Obama wins the nomination, since, as reported on the front page here, even Clinton's campaign thinks she only has at best a 10% chance. I am NOT asking Clinton to drop out, I am simply presenting a hypothetical based on what seems to be at least a 90% outcome (and if you disagree with this, that's fine... but that's not the point of this diary).

So, in any case, if and when Obama wraps up the nomination, whether  in a month, or August or whenever, I know that there are already an (unfortunate) number of folks here who promise to never ever vote for Obama.  It is unfortunate that people would base their general election decision on spite (as I, and I think most other Obama supporters would still support Clinton in the general over McCain in a heartbeat), but so be it.  Your loss is unfortunate, but apparently unavoidable.

But many of the diaries here written by the "Clinton or Bust" folks are highly critical of Obama, and often amount to "Hit Pieces".  These diaries also often make it up on to the "Rec" list.  I understand that, during the primary season, the target is Obama, but is this going to continue on here during the general election?  Will MyDD, a site whose supposed (at least partial) purpose is in electing Democrats, continue to boost anti-Obama (and Pro-McCain) diaries, or will we actually try and help out our Democratic candidate?  Are we going to see week after week of diaries of what a horrible person Obama is, or are we going to help defend him against the Republican slime?

I'd just find it sad if a site that I still consider a good place for (mostly) Democrats and progressives to come and talk, becomes basically an extension of the McCain campaign.  I sincerely hope that doesn't happen, and I'd feel the same exact way about Daily Kos as well if Clinton became the nominee and that site continued with the Anti-Clinton diaries.

Based on your premise, what happens to kos if Hillary gets the nomination?

Re: What Happens to MyDD after the Primary? (2.00 / 3)

Nothing. The site isn't just an extension of the presidential race. It covers congressional races, environmental topics, the war, and a lot of times just chat (in recurring series like Cheers & Jeers, WYFP and Brothers & Sisters).

Sure, there'd be a period of mourning, and undoubtedly some people vowing never to vote for her. But after the adjustment period, people would focus their efforts on McCain, and the work we're doing for all the other candidates and issues.

To contrast, the front-page content of this site is almost exclusively Clinton/Obama related, and probably 90% of the diaries are about it. The two websites are not necessarily reflexive.

Re: What Happens to MyDD after the Primary? (none / 0)

MyDD was here before the primaries and will remain after it, probably with more readers since some of us have found a home here after being beaten up on at kos.

But why do you stay here if you aren't happy with the current content?

Re: What Happens to MyDD after the Primary? (2.00 / 4)

MyDD is going to be just fine.  I have been an Obama supporter here for over a year and it just feels like home.  We have always been in a minority here, Open Left spun off with some front-pagers and still we remained, mostly.  The two waves of Hillary supporters came and commandeered the recommended list and still we persevered.  It's a good and collegial site and we have lots of work to do.  Hopefully the Hillary supporters who are Democrats first will stay and strengthen the fight for the general election.  It'll be fine.  I look forward to it.

Some people will get mad and leave, (2.00 / 1)

Some people will adjust and stay.  That's how things shake out.  I don't think Jerome would be tolerant of a continuing anti-Obama movement here if/when Obama has the nomination sewed up and Hillary concedes.

Re: What Happens to MyDD after the Primary? (2.00 / 1)

I can only speak for myself, but I have deleted several sites from those that I visit & read regularly.

Why? Because if I wanted to be spun and propagandized, I could turn to Pravda or perhaps the news out of Iraq courtesy of the US military releases.

I only began posting here and in a few other places out of shock & dismay at the spectre of the party that I have supported for several decades, of the Democrats insisting on putting up for candidate for President Senator Obama, who, in my ever so humble opinion, lost any remote possibility of winning a general election within the last week.

It seems distasteful for the American media thus it is ignored. Ignore this at out peril. Go read the comments done in the Guardian today interviewing working class whites in Pennslyvania..the mortal damage is obvious to me, at least, based on observations of Presidential races since JFK versus Nixon.

I understand the sensitivity on the issue of race and the ramifications of the Democrats denying the nomination to Obama if he leads in delegates and/or popular vote.

Sadly, I also understand that the damage done in the working class white neighborhoods of Ohio and Pennslyvania, not to mention the voters in Florida and Michigan, what this will deliver to us in November.

In a roundabout way to answer your question...right now I am looking for places to find some common sense discussion of the issues, where political correctness and hypersensitivity are not the prevailing culture...if this site allows this, fine, I will stay and look for varying points of view.

Right now, there are not many such sites or outlets. Our national sensitivity over race prevents many of the elite media to even deal with the issue, most of them want it to just go away so they will not have to discuss it.

We can pretend it will go away, out damn spot. But, it will not, it cannot, not in the political real world, on the ground in places like Ohio, where the last election was finally lost...Obama will have no chance to win any Southern state, not a remote possibility now.

The tidal wave that will carry McCain into the White House, the war that will go on in Iraq, the economy, in the end it may be due to the inability of the left to back down off the bandwagon after the wagon has been demolished for all intents & purposes.

I will be sad for my party, but sadder for the nation. I will look for some truth between then and now, and afterwards, but having been insulted, marginalized and dismissed by so many fervent Obama supporters & apparently stone deaf & tin ear Democratic superdelegates, I will find it hard to return to sites I thought were thoughtful and informative.

Now, they are nothing more than monkey grinders pumping out the music...drown out any consideration of the tragedy of Wright...nominating Obama is not right, Wright means it is wrong and we all know that two Wrights...well, I will not even finish it, its too facile

Re: What Happens to MyDD after the Primary? (none / 0)

I wonder what other Obama sites will do after Obama is nominated and lost GE.  The people who think that republicans will let Wright's controversy die are living in fool's paradise.  I thought a week before Obama had a decent chance of being next POTUS, but I am today certain that we end up with McCain as POTUS if Obama is our candidate

by democrat1 on Sat Mar 22, 2008 at 07:15:08 AM EST

I hope it won't be a site (none / 0)

Where we all come and kvetch about President McCain.  The issue that the Rev. Wright incident raised that has the real potential of defeating Obama isn't race, it is patriotism. I believe Obama loves his country, but the elite lefty intellectuals surrounding his campaign don't get the fact that in order to win, he needs to convince people that he is America's chief defender, chief promoter, and all the rest.

Fun fact: If you're posting to a liberal blog, you are an elite lefty intellectual.

Isn't this supposed to be a progressive site? You're not a progressive if you'd rather see President John McCain than President Clinton/Obama.

Re: What Happens to MyDD after the Primary? (2.00 / 1)

MyDD should ban any member who refuses to support our nominee after the convention.

If its Obama (or Clinton) the site should be very clear in it's purpose to do anything for him to win with no room to try to harm that cause.

Re: What Happens to MyDD after the Primary? (none / 0)

I would vote for Obmama, but I could not advocate for him, online, or by evey putting a yard sign in front of my house.  I imagine I would come here and read, lurk.

Don't be sad. (none / 0)

"I'd just find it sad...."  Why do you assume this will happen?  You're putting it out there as if it's a given.  I would certainly support Obama if he got the nod - as I would Hillary.

I just find it sad that Obama supporters continually use the word sad.  "It's sad to see it here."  said one Obama supporter to me in a post after I made some pro Hillary remark (no mention of Sen. Obama).  "It's sad to hear you say this" - says another.

Be of good cheer - we'll support the guy if he gets the nod.  But while the primary is on - why aren't we allowed to voice our reservations about Sen. Obama?

Ask Jerome... (none / 0)

because he will be the one frozen out from the roots.  And these idiots, if he let them continue, will just provide unsubstantiatied fodder or lies to the GOP.  But this is Jerome's site, if he like it like this, and Obama wins, he will be the butt of many internet jokes.  Sadly.

DKos is dealing with bad p.r. right now... (none / 0)

...not MyDD. You have this all a bit backwards! There were more slams aired against DKos yesterday in the MSM, especially on MSNBC.

This is upsetting a lot of folks over there; their traffic is down; the quality of writing there has sunk much more notably than their traffic in the past 8-10 days, too.

Yes, the commenter to whom I'm responding has this quite contorted.

Disingenuous (2.00 / 1)

All of the Obama supporters who are NOW saying, "We would have supported Clinton if she won the nomination" are they same ones who say, "If he super delegates override the pledged delegates" I can no longer support the party. The idea that because someone carries a 'D' beside there name they are qualified to lead the country is absurd and people here and on other so called progressive blogs should realize that before they go all in for Obama. Can Barack win the general election, Maybe. Is it the best thing for the country to have an Obama Presidency, I am far from convinced. The right went through this  for 8 years. Do we continue to support someone who obviously isn't qualified in George Bush and bring the country down? They went party before country. Ideology before being pragmatic. I should hope that the left will put a little more thought into their selection for President

Diary premise is based upon falsel context... (none / 0)

The Politico story, itself, and those that chose to use it (and spin it) over the past couple of days as Obama propaganda are at fault here. This would include this diarist, as well.

Clinton will continue to raise money, despite the "money problems" propaganda, as well. (I've heard she raised somewhere around $3-$4 million in just the past 72 hours, if not more; and she's been doing quite well in that category all month, too.)

Circling back around to the Politico piece, the following was buried in it, at the very end (in terms of how it's been recanted), at least as far as the unnamed Clinton insider's comments were concerned:

"This issue [Wright] is the first thing that's come along that I think is potentially fatal to his electability argument," the strategist said.

Then, of course, there's the other elephant in the room, and that's the reality that neither candidate may not enough votes to obtain the nomination until the Convention. Obama has 1,622 delegates as of this writing, according to the AP.  He needs 2,025 delegates to win. People keep referincing the math; but, the reality is the numbers support BOTH candidates staying in the race all the way down the homestretch. The details get in the way of this type of Obama propaganda all the time. It is what it is.

Re: What Happens to MyDD after the Primary? (none / 0)

There's a huge number of people on DKos who've refused to support Clinton if she's the nominee. There was actually a poll taken at one point, and if I recall correctly, hundreds of people said they wouldn't vote for her.

I'm sure MyDD will be fine. But I think anyone posting hit pieces about him during the GE should probably be booted. Anti-Obama diaries would be purely destructive at that point.

Even John McCain lusts after teh engels.

Re: What Happens to MyDD after the Primary? (2.00 / 1)

Go to the DailyKos and you'll find out that criticisms of Obama on this site is rather tame compared to criticism of Clinton on the Kos. I thank MyDD for making it against the rules to criticize other diarists. At the Kos, if you support Clinton they will lecture you on how stupid you are.
